mist

Below is a poem I wrote in three minutes (I haven’t edited!) in response to the three word prompt in the title of this post. I’ve written five three minute poems to warm up for a more public offering this Saturday, but I’d love more practice! If you’d like me to write you one, want to read the others, or just for more background to this challenge, please check out my previous post.

https://wordsthatserve.wordpress.com/2016/11/27/poetic-practice/

The fire in the belly
of mother earth
rises water ways into
a mist that fills the air
and cloaks the dawn
to meet the sacred sunrise
for each day birthed
anew is welcomed
with equal beauty, splendor
the moon bows out
to the sun
the birds sing
the new day in
and old and new
rise again refreshed
by the turn, turn, turn
that keeps life moving
always moving
and the elements
rising, falling, rising, falling
as one who remembers
walks on the beach
away from walls and noise
and feels for herself
the sacred start
of a new day

This is my response to the following challenge:

https://promptlings.wordpress.com/2016/06/14/the-sandbox-challenge-43-a-whole-in-one/

…and it’s also another poem for my own challenge – to write an affirmative acrostic for every letter of the alphabet. Just X, Y and Z to go!

When I feel broken, it’s because I’ve gone

Hard, rigid, resistant

Only by softening and opening,

Letting life in to touch my heart

Even when it hurts, can I melt into

Grace and mould myself back together

Evolving and expanding until

Separateness succumbs to softness and my

Soul knows its true place at one with the whole

Thank you to all who’ve been encouraging me along by reading these poems – do stick around 🙂

trees

Shadows weave the web that binds me

Falsely in thought, in truth I’m free

Do I dare trust escape is near?

Whisper my love, the trees can hear

Gentle moonlight, pray conceal me

And let my secret rest with thee

Would that I could put down my fear

Whisper my love, the trees can hear

Go, get thee to your hiding place

Tread with care, not a sound, no trace

Though it may seem your way is clear

Whisper my love, the trees can hear

Winds have set the trees to swaying

Go, there’s danger in delaying

Swiftly and surely, disappear

Whisper my love, the trees can hear

Wary of the daylight’s greeting

Grace gift me a while yet sleeping

Smiling your blessings in my ear

Whisper my love, the trees can hear

This is my response to a wonderful poetry challenge set by Jane Dougherty – thanks Jane! Follow this link if you’d like to have a go yourself, and to read other poetic responses.

Felt like a good time to break from the acrostics – halfway through the alphabet – I’ll return with ‘N’ tomorrow 🙂

DSCF0231An old photo, my brother and sister at the end there…

looking forward to taking some more:-)

Welcome to day nineteen, for which I’ve used the word Family (I’m still playing catch up…) which I’ve chosen because my brother and one of my sisters, along with her partner, arrive to visit Mum and I today. Can’t wait…but won’t linger, as the house is not yet ready to welcome them and there’s cooking to do! Enjoy:-)

And…why not have a go at a Christmas acrostic yourself in the comments! I’d love to read yours. I also love to receive suggestions of Christmas words to use as the basis for the next acrostics I write, so please share your favourite festive words in the comments too, and then come back to read the poem you’ve inspired!

F or these few precious days

A s limited as the life giving light right now

M ountains are moved

I n order to be together as

L aughter, and hugs feed the fire of love

Y ou ignite in me just by your presence

solstice-medI first shared this photo, and a little about this ritual, in this post: https://wordsthatserve.wordpress.com/2013/12/23/week-31-of-good-deeds/

Welcome to day nineteen, for which I’ve used the word Ritual (I’m still playing catch up…) which I’ve chosen because I began today with a dance as the opening of our annual community solstice ritual, where we walk into a spiral reflecting on the year that has been and light a candle in the center to bring light with us as we transition into the New Year and open to what will be. It’s a very beautiful ritual which I look forward to each year, as I’m sure you all have your own individually, as a family or as a community, which you return to year in year out and give this time meaning. May they bring you comfort and joy. Enjoy:-)

And…why not have a go at a Christmas acrostic yourself in the comments! I’d love to read yours. I also love to receive suggestions of Christmas words to use as the basis for the next acrostics I write, so please share your favourite festive words in the comments too, and then come back to read the poem you’ve inspired!

R eturning again to the warmth and comforting core

I n those repeated practices

T hat, by their very constancy

U nveil with quiet strength the changes in ourselves

A nd give us reason and space to reflect on

L ife, both where we are and where we are heading

Welcome to day eighteen, for which I’ve used the word Nativity given to me by this random word generator site (https://www.thegamegal.com/word-generator/) because I’m getting a bit stuck (which is why I’m playing catch up again…) and samey in my choice of words! Enjoy:-)

And…why not have a go at a Christmas acrostic yourself in the comments! I’d love to read yours. I also love to receive suggestions of Christmas words to use as the basis for the next acrostics I write, so please share your favourite festive words in the comments too, and then come back to read the poem you’ve inspired!

T o a virgin mother miraculously born

I n Bethlehem that Christmas morn

V isiting kings brought offerings

P1030056Welcome to day seventeen, for which I’ve chosen the word Angels, because we dug out our decorations today and found our angel candle holders – hooray!  Enjoy:-)

Welcome to day fifteen, for which I’ve chosen the word Spirit, because we bought a Christmas tree today and it feels like we’re getting into it.  Enjoy:-)

And…why not have a go at a Christmas acrostic yourself in the comments! I’d love to read yours. I also love to receive suggestions of Christmas words to use as the basis for the next acrostics I write, so please share your favourite festive words in the comments too, and then come back to read the poem you’ve inspired!

S o much to buy, make, bake, clean it’s easy to lose

P atience with the very ones I’m making the effort for

I want to remember, in those moments when it’s all too much, what’s

R eally important, and take time to enjoy the precious company

I see so rarely that when I do, I want it all to be perfect, but

T hat’s not how life is, or how I am – that’s not love…

Welcome to day fifteen, for which I’ve chosen the word Games, because my mother and I have just been talking about how much my Grandmother enjoyed playing cards, and how good she was at it. Christmas is now also about the only time we come together and play games as a family, and I’m looking forward to it.  Enjoy:-)
