My day began
with hanging
freshly washed laundry
on the line
amidst early morning drizzle
I trusted would clear
because I’d checked the forecast
my day ended
with bringing in
dry, clean feeling
clothes to fold
and pile satisfyingly
on the right shelves
so much happened
in between
my clothes being wet and washed
and dry and folded
some of it was messy
but the bookends
of my day
contained it nicely
clothes wet
clothes dry
just as intended

I’m smiling. Great poem and title! Some days there is a great feeling to get one thing planned accomplished!

What a beautiful way to look at your day. Bookends. I love it. The only other time I’ve heard that term (besides for actual bookends, that is) is for commercials that are both the first one into a break, and the last one back from a break, so they bookend the commercial break, and have the most chance of being seen. I will now look at the word with much more joy, thanks to you!

Thank you:-) I’m glad this poem offered you a new perspective on this word, just made me think how important beginnings and endings are. Like the commercials you mentioned, it’s the start and the finish we remember most…the rest had to work much harder to be memorable:-) Hugs, H xxx

Great poem and creative concept … at this time of year I still look on it as an achievement if I manage to get the washing dry outside 🙂

Bookends. We each can wonder what our own bookends are to a day. I think mine is starting with writing and a cup of tea before the sun rises, and then ending with a book and a cup of chamomile tea at bedtime. And yes, then there’s all the mess in between. Your poem is LOVELY.

Thanks for this thoughtful comment, and I’m so glad you liked the poem. My days are bookended in various ways, but starting the day with meditation is one of my regulars. I’m out of the morning pages habit at the moment, but that used to start my day, and then I closed with a gratitude journal – those were nice bookends. Perhaps I should dust them off… Hugs, H xxx

Nice pun- ‘dusting’ them off. Yes, meditation is a lovely way to begin and end the day. I need to try that (but before or after my tea??). 🙂

I love this, Harula – what a clever concept 😀

Thanks Dianne:-) That sleepy ‘just before going to bed’ time can be very creative, like I’m already accessing another world, or letting go of the demands of this one…that’s when I wrote this. Hugs, H xxx
