river sleep

I got lost recently

but don’t worry

everyone else knew where I was

so no missing persons ad

but for the life of me

my ‘I’ was hiding

lost in a haystack of busyness

and demands

but haystacks get eaten

or burned

and life climbed out of the ashes

and took the shell of me

to the river

‘What’ve you been doing all summer?’

shell asked the trees accusingly

‘Growing. Why?’

shell smiled

shell reached the river

and met with sleep

who proposed a visit

‘What here?

I can’t lie down

on rocks and sand –

I’ve just washed my hair!’

And what I heard

was so absurd

my ‘I’ rushed back

to comfort me

and I took off my jumper

to cushion the rock

and slept myself
